Gun control on the big stage

“The very fame of our strength and readiness would be a means of discouraging our enemies; for ’tis a wise and true saying, that one sword often keeps another in the scabbard. The way to secure peace is to be prepared for war. They that are on their guard, and appear ready to receive their adversaries, are in much less danger of being attacked than the supine, secure and negligent.” -Benjamin Franklin

It is a simple and very true concept, but like many other founding principles, this is another one that Obama seems determined to fight.  Whether it is naivety or simple ignorance is anyone’s guess.  I am of course speaking of the START II treaty Obama is signing with Russia today as well as his general “road to zero” philosophy on nuclear weapons.  While others are modernizing their weaponry, we seem intent on the opposite.

The administration claims that the signing of this treaty (with a country that has a history of noncompliance) will encourage countries such as Iran and North Korea to abandon their nuclear ambitions.  That is na├»ve thinking at best.  These countries will continue on their preferred path no matter what we do so why in the world would we weaken our national defense. In the end, it will be a unilateral disarmament because there is no way to verify Russia is actually following through and our enemies are certainly not going to follow suit.  There are many other concerns with this treaty, but I think the overall concept is bad enough by itself.

Like I said in the title, liberals are taking their gun control mentality to the big stage.  The same misguided philosophy of gun control to stop violence is now being pushed into the national defense arena.  And this new policy will fail for the same reasons that small arms gun control policies have failed…the bad guys don’t care about the rules.

Seeing bad decision after bad decision coming from Washington is getting pretty depressing out there so I figured I would leave you with a pretty funny comment I saw on a blog the other day…”Does anyone else feel like we are trapped in an episode of Pinky and the Brain, and Pinky is running the country?”  Personally I feel more and more like that each day.
